Cays, beloved concertmaster of the Everett Symphony and of many other Snohomish & King County musical groups, passed away on March 17, 2002 after a long battle with cancer. In order that Ethel will live on as an active and influential member of the Everett Symphony, a scholarship fund for collegiate string players has been established in her name. According to a plan designed by Dr. Paul-Elliott Cobbs, music director of the Everett Symphony, string majors have the opportunity to be interns in the Everett Symphony in exchange for tuition assistance. Ethel was most excited about the potential infusion of young talent into the orchestra and was extremely supportive of this program. Ethel will continue to be a vital part of the music community in Snohomish County through this scholarship program. Interns are invited to audition from Pacific Northwest colleges including, but not limited to, University of Washington, Western Washington University and Central Washington University. Ethel Cays is survived by her husband, Joe Bynum, four children, three stepchildren and 10 grandchildren. Her family feels this scholarship fund is a perfect tribute to her since two of her greatest passions were music and education.
